Remembering, Researching, Understanding
Brand Design, Webdesign The Leibniz Institute for Contemporary HistoryRemembering, Researching, Understanding
The investigation into the 1972 Olympic attack is not only a historical challenge but also an ethical responsibility towards the victims and their families. Therefore, in the fall of 2022, the federal government decided to establish an international commission of historians for a comprehensive scholarly analysis of the attack, its background, and aftermath.
Task
The website will be regularly updated with current research results, reports, and event announcements, providing a space for serious, scholarly reflection and discussion for all interested parties. It will be maintained regularly and must naturally adapt to the growing scope. The website will be available in three languages: German, English, and Hebrew. A particular challenge was the Hebrew version, as it required a complete shift in direction from right to left in the design.
It was also essential to handle the words and images used with sensitivity. This is because many words and images are already part of a historical discourse and are viewed, assessed, and evaluated in different ways.

Solution
The design of the website follows a deliberately neutral and respectful style, which both emphasizes the scholarly nature and maintains sensitivity towards the affected individuals. It draws inspiration from classic newspaper layouts, working with clearly structured columns, organized sections, and a clear hierarchy of text. Typographically, the well-established fonts Helvetica and Times were chosen to ensure a comprehensive character set in all languages. The integration of storytelling elements in selected areas of the site creates a dynamic and contemporary effect.

Social Media
The design was adapted for social media and enhanced with additional design elements for various applications. A more dynamic and attention-grabbing style was deliberately chosen, as it pertains to the coverage of current events and activities aimed at engaging a younger audience.
